Keeping spare change around the house?

Well now is the perfect time to check your pockets, the floor of your car, the back of the sofa, piggy banks and anywhere else odd coins might be lurking.

As an old £1 coin has sold on eBay for £5,100 all due to a minting error, reports Devon Live.

The quid was released by the Royal Mint in 1991 but because of a mistake the value of the coin shoots up.

They are normally sold for around £13 on ebay according to The Sun , but one lucky seller from Northern Ireland got more than they could ever have expected.

The £1 coin was inscribed along the edge with the words "DECUS ET TUTAMEN", which means "glory and defence".

But the seller claimed the words were 'upside down', meaning you would need to hold the coin with the Queen's head facing downwards.

However, the Royal Mint website reveals that there is actually no correct way for the inscription to appear on the coin, which doesn't actually make it that rare.

But that didn't stop someone paying £5,100 for the coin.

What do I do if I find one?

ChangChecker's advice to someone who thinks they've found an example of this coin is to send the coin off to The Royal Mint Museum, which offers a free verification service .

You get the coin back - along with their findings - a few weeks later.

Armed with this information, you should be able to get more value from it when selling either online or at a more traditional auction house.
