Bruno Mars wore eyeliner during the 2017 Grammy’s as he performed a tribute to Prince, however, he normally does not wear makeup. That’s not to say he won’t in the future, he has been known for some awesome retro looks.

Many celebrities, of all genders, have been known to wear makeup on the red carpet. Of course, people have known that the entertainment industry uses it for video and print work. More and more men are starting to wear makeup. Top makeup brands are hiring men as official spokespeople to promote their wears and it’s become much more mainstream lately.

Brief History of Men and Makeup

Though the movement is gaining popularity, men wearing makeup is not a new concept, it can be traced back to ancient Egypt and Rome. In 4000 B.C. Egypt, men used to wear makeup as a status symbol and to portray their masculinity. By 1 A.D. in Rome, men were wearing makeup for aesthetic reasons.

Men in the Elizabethian era, and later in 18th century France, were known for wearing makeup as well as high heels, again to improve their looks, and not as a status symbol. When movies came about men wore makeup to look better on-screen, and that practice continues today.

One of the most flamboyant movements of men wearing makeup came in the 1970s and 1980s with musical artists such as David Bowie, Prince, and Steven Tyler. Later this list would grow to include Boy George, George Michael, and Adam Lambert, amongst others. Maybe one day Bruno Mars will be added to this list.

By the 2010s it became more prevalent, and more for everyday use, instead of just being part of an act on stage. YouTube played a big role by allowing male makeup artists to showcase their art and have a voice. Makeup companies took notice and started signing some of these artists.

Men in Makeup

In 2020 there are a lot of beauty gurus who are part of the YouTube beauty community, and the number of men joining the community is growing. In 2016 CoverGirl made headlines when they signed James Charles as one of their spokespeople. Maybelline followed up a few months later, in 2017, by hiring Manny Gutierrez. One of the top makeup brands right now is Jeffree Star Cosmetics, the most popular YouTube beauty guru with over 18 million subscribers on the platform, and over 16 million Instagram followers.

Not only are men in makeup, but now there are cosmetic brands that have been developed specifically for men, while other brands boast they can be used by both men and women. And more men are taking up the practice. Many start as a way to cover up acne, and feel that they should be able to feel confident about themselves, just like women do.

While there are the Jeffree Stars and James Charles’ of the world, that doesn’t mean that men have to wear a full face of extravagant makeup. Many women don’t like that look, or are intimidated by it as well. There are plenty of YouTube tutorials showing men how to wear makeup in a way that most people can’t tell you’ve got it on.

Bruno Mars’ Style

Bruno Mars seems to have phases of looks that he utilizes, and all of them seem to have at least a little bit of old-school to them. Whether it’s the bouffant or Jheri curl hair, the fedora or baseball hat with loud colors, he likes to mix it up. So you never know what he comes up with next.
